The hobby horse in its earliest form was used by pre-historic tribal story-tellers. We know ancient Greek and Roman children had them as play toys, and they remained a favourite childhood companion throughout history. Medieval illustrations show court jesters with hobby horse in hand playing the fool. The medieval writer Geoffrey Chaucer mentions this toy in his "Canterbury Tales". Hobby Horses were still common play toys seen on the streets of Tudor/Stuart towns.
